But I started poetry and short narratives in school ages ago. I then began to take rap seriously in sixth or seventh grade because even though everyone was doing it, there wasn't anything I heard that I liked. With the type of budgeting my school had, there also wasn't a studio or way to do it professionally. It was a really poor county. There were no shows there and I was deprived of everything, really—not a lot of things happened in my town. I always loved music and I was exposed to various genres: My mom would listen to R&B, my dad listened to rap, my grandma listened to soul, my Uncle Buddy listened to country, guitar, and rock, and my Uncle George listened to heavy metal rock. So I had a bunch of different family members who were influenced by music in diverse ways, and I think I took it in from them."WHAT MAKES YOU WORTH LISTENING TO: center cut kurti with jeans Growing up, Bishop listened to everything from his grandfather's old jazz records to R&B legend Mary J. Blige and hip-hop artists like J. Dilla, a variety of influences that he still looks to today. "You can go through my phone and see the weirdest stuff," he confesses of his diverse music library. "I'll have Ab-Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Bill Evans, Bob James, Charles Hamilton, Herbie Hancock, Grace Slick, and more." He was never concerned with what other kids at his school considered cool, and spent most of his time focused on creative pursuits. "Ever since 7th or 6th grade, parties got big and that was never my vibe," he says. "It's usually me and my music." That confidence and self-awareness, rare in someone his age, translates to his sound. He has an old-school flow, layered over productions that are thoughtful and intricate without being overwrought—every lyric is honest and intelligent.
